Prayers for the week of January 28, 2007

Phillip Yancey in Prayer (191) says this :

Jesus taught a model prayer, the Lord’s Prayer, but otherwise gave few rules. His teaching reduces down to three simple principles: Keep it honest, keep it simple, and keep it up. Mainly, Jesus pressed home that we come as beloved children to a Father who loves us in advance and cares deeply about our lives. Ask young parents what is the correct way for their toddlers to approach them and you will probably will get a puzzled look. Correct way? Being a parent means you do your best to remain available to your children and responsive to their needs. As Jesus said, if a human parent responds with compassion and not hostility, now much more will God.

"Let us then approach the throne of grace
with confidence," urged the author of Hebrews, "so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need."

Approach God with confidence this week. Pray anytime and any way you can.

Prayers for the week of January 21, 2007

To get us started this week I present a quote about intercessory prayer from Phillip Yancey in Prayer - Does It Make Any Difference?, page 303.

Crudely put, I once envisioned intercession as bringing requests to God that God may not have thought of, then talking God into granting them. Now I see intercession as an increase in my awareness. When I pray for another person, I am praying for God to open my eyes so that I can see that person as God does, and then enter into the stream of love that God already directs toward that person.

Something happens when I pray for others in this way. Bringing them into God’s presence changes my attitude toward them and ultimately affects our relationship. I pray for the neighbor who is always trying to sneak out of paying his neighborhood assessments and begin to see him not as a conniver but as a friendless man who lives with constant financial worries. I pray for my drug-addicted relative and see past the irresponsible behavior to a wounded, desperate soul.

In short, prayer allows me to see others as God sees them (and me): uniquely flawed and uniquely gifted bearers of God’s image. I begin seeing them through Jesus’ eyes, as beloved children whom the Father longs to embrace. I know that God wants their marriages to grow stronger and their children to stay out of trouble; God wants them healthy, and strong to resist temptation, capable of reaching out to others in need. I bring those prayers to God because I know God wills the very same thing. What I desire in the people I pray for, God desires all the more.

I hope you will pour your heart out in prayer this week!

48 Prayer Journal Part II

Here is the second part of our prayer journal from the recent 48 hours of prayer. Thanks to Melissa for getting all these typed up. We tried to preserve them as they were written. Forgive any typos on our part. Please continue to enter your prayers for this week under that original post.

Matthew 6:9-13 Our Saviors prayer, His example to us is so simple yet so complete and full of heavenly wisdom. Thank you Lord for your wonderful example. May I always trust your ways and your wisdom and may I never be ashamed of you or what you want from me. Fill my heart with love until it overflows to others. Give me strength to be selfless and to have a servants heart like yours. Do the same for all who call themselves Christians and may we stand up in unison for you and may we always be willing to go where you send us and be about your Fathers business. Forgive us of all our wrongs and help us forgive those who wrong us so that when it is time we will all be able to feast together at your Fathers table. Please let us remember that here on earth it is but a brief time and this time is not about us and what the flesh wants. This time is for you and what you want. Keep us on your path and if we stumble or fall bring us back to you. In Christ Name, Amen ………God Bless all who are followers of His.

Dear God, How ashamed I do not come to you this intently and deeply every day. All the blessings and miracles you give me are abundant. My prayers seem to be about a help from you. You are always there to help me and show me your way. I will be more help to others—to try to show them your light and your way. I will try to be a miracle to someone else—everyday—maybe my children, my family, friends, or a stranger. You have answered my prayers that I have prayed in deep despair. How grateful my heart is! Use me, let me be a light in someone’s life. To God be all the glory. Amen

Lord God, I can feel your love and faithfulness surrounding us in this place! How unworthy we are to come before you, yet you welcome us into your arms of love. Thank you for your sacrifice and for all of the blessings you give to us everyday. Amen

God thank you for hearts that are soft. Help me to be kinder and to show others your Son’s love in action. Amen—Amen

Be in me Lord as I walk , as I talk and as I act in my daily life that I would reflect your ways that all those who live near me may see your glory and be refreshed. Thank you Lord

Lord, I pray that you be with me as I strive to be like you. I have struggled for a while now to be motivated and to be strong to do what is right for me as living as your daughter. I have not fully trusted you and have not fully relied on your. Help me to grow in you. Help me to guide our young people. Be with our soldiers, namely Jordan, Shad and Tim. But do be with all soldiers as they fight for our country! Keep them safe and give them peace! Help me find a stable job. I love subbing but I want something more steady. Be with my parents as they get older and help them to stay focused on you and what you need from them. Be with all the couples who have been married in the last few years. Many are still together and some have already grown apart. Be with those together, allow them to be one with you and for them to keep God #1! Be with those who are no longer together. Keep them from doing things that they will regret at a later time. I pray for peace, happiness, and love for this coming year. Thank you for always being there and thank you for Jesus. Amen

God, it’s been good to be here. I read through this book and a tear comes to my eye. Encouragement. Lord, help me to see you as you are as much as possible. Then help me to see me as you see me. Here’s what I need: Peace, trust, faith, patience, gentleness. Help me to see the positive instead of the negative. Change my heart, O God. Give me gratitude for all things. Use me effectively in your service. Thank you for the Mitchell Church of Christ. May we reflect your glory.

Lord, I take my sin, my fear, my anger, my pride, my selfishness, my bitterness, my shame, my lack of love, my judgementalism, my stubbornness—I want to nail them to this cross before me as you were nailed to that cross so long ago. Fill my heart with your Holy Spirit God. Let me not quench that spirit. Thank you God for Jesus. Help me Lord to be more like you. To you be the glory Lord. Amen

Lord why is it so easy to pray and feel your presence here and not everywhere? Help me to take you with me out of this room. In and through your Son, Amen

Lord I’m struggling in my life. I’m having trouble to see you in anything. My heart ain’t letting you in and I’m blind to you. I pray that you ease my heart so I can let you back into my life. I pray that you help me by giving me more opportunities. Lord my faith in you is really weak right now. I don’t know why I lost almost all my faith. Before you help me through I pray that you be with my uncle in Iraq and be with my brother who needs you more. Thank you for what you have done for me. Amen

Father, Thank you for this special time to come to you in prayer. Help me to find time everyday to feel as close to you as I do right now. Help me to realize that life is not about me and my wants, but everything is about you. Help me to put aside myself to focus on you O Lord, and how I can bring others to you. Please be with this church family as they worship you by serving others. Thank you for bringing me into the Mitchell Church of Christ. They are a wonderful group of Christians that have done so much to strengthen my faith. I ask that you be with my friend Pam, who seems to have tragedy in every aspect of her life: health, finances, family, ect. Keep her faith strong and let her know that you are always with her. Please be with my children and let them grow in your word and serve you all of their lives. Thank you for the blessings you give me everyday. Amen

Lord thank you for all you do for me and my family. Thank you for this church family as they are very inspiring to me and my daily walk with you. Please help me in all my negative thoughts and fears and give me ways to deal with the problems of my life in a positive and holy manner. Be with all the leaders in the world and show them the right decisions to make. Be with all my family and may they all become closer to you and your teachings. Above all dear Lord may I become closer to you and lead my life in a way that you would want me to. Thank you Lord for this opportunity to express how much you mean to me and may I be able to show other people how much you mean to me through my daily actions. Amen

Dear Lord, God be with me and my family this week. Be with all who have passed this last week and Lord God in Heaven above be with us all down here on this earth and please send your Son Jesus Christ down to us here and just put your Healing comforts and sheltering hand around this church family as we strive to live and be like your perfect son. We ask that you watch over Matthew as he manages the ReGeneration store. Be with Allen as he sets an example of your Son. Be with Gary as he brings in teenagers to his Upper Room and teaches and sets them on the right track to Jesus. God we ask that you be with Melissa as she works to get the preparations for the next church services. God we just ask that you put your hand around us and bring us closer to you. In Jesus name we pray…Amen

Lord help all people who do not believe in you see your light and love. Lord help the people who are sick or dieing. Help the families of dead loved ones. Help me and my family. Help me get better and help me and my family that even though we are not the same religion we can love each other for the people we are. God help the poor, the people who are traveling that they would be safe and keep you the Lord in their hearts and minds. Help the people that have been in the hurricanes and 9-11 that they thank the Lord that they are safe. Lord cloth the naked and feed the hungry and let the thirsty drink. Lord I love you. In Jesus Name Amen

Dear Lord, Better is one day in your courts than a thousand elsewhere. Father I want to dwell in your house forever. Help me put my selfish desires behind me so I can serve you better in 2007. Father I know your plans are bigger and better than anything I can dream of for this church. Help us see your plan for this church in 2007. Father align our hearts with your heart in 2007. Father please continue to bless this church family in 2007.

1-7-07 How neat, I didn’t even realize the date until I wrote it down “seven” one of the holy numbers. Seven things I am thankful for…family, friends, church, health, blog, Jesus, and food! Seven things I want in this year …home, peace, understanding, better attitude, renewal in relationship with my savior, better mother and wife, stillness! Be still and know that I am God keeps coming to my mind…I know it is the Lord saying “Stop, let me love you and take care of you” but my selfish ways and Satan’s hold on me won’t allow me to be still. So Lord, I pray that I will stop the business and allow you to speak and fill those empty places that I want to hang on to because I think that is who I am, it’s all I’ve ever known. Just a stupid girl who never does anything right. Let me feel your peace and love so it doesn’t matter what others think of me or know of me. All that matters is that I’m your child. Be still, be still, be still and know. In His Name Amen

Oh man! I could write so many things I regret, did wrong, hate…ect, ect but during this prayers time as I was thinking about it…God doesn’t care!! He loves you anyways! The slates clean! How amazing is that! Dear Lord, I thank you so very much for the wonderful, loving family I have. I am blessed with encouragers, lovers, and worshipers of God! I thank you for my youth group and church,. I am still amazed that God has lead us to this church. Everyone is a friend to me and always an encourager. He is never judgmental, he just loves you without a second thought! Help me this year, 2007, Wow! to worship you with a full heart. Help me to be content with what I’ve been given and what I have not been given. Be with this church on our journey to Servanthood! Please help me to be a better example of you through my school. You are truly humble! I don’t want to care about earthly things, be caught up in all the lies that trick my eyes and say it’s all about me! I’m so tired of it being about me! Thanks for everyone’s encouragement. Thank you Allen for all your love you show to the congregation everyday! God is Good!

Dear Lord, help me to know your love and help me to realize that most of my concerns are not important. I want to do a better job of putting your first and others second. And especially put myself last. Let your light shine on me and help me to reflect it to others. I praise your Holy Name

Prayers for the Week of January 14, 2007

I will start us off this week’s prayers with a brief essay in Philip Yancey’s book Prayer - Does it Make any Difference? on "everyday" prayers, written by Karl Rahner.

Digging a Small Shaft

Oh everyday prayer! You are poor and a little tattered and the worse for wear like the everyday itself. August thoughts and exalted feelings are difficult for you. You are not an exalted symphony in a great cathedral, but more like a devout song, well-intended and coming from the heart, a little monotonous and naive. But, prayer of the everyday, you are the prayer of loyalty and reliability, the prayer of selfless, unrewarded service to the divine majesty, you are the dedication which makes the gray hours light and the trivial moments great. You don’t ask about the experience of the one praying, but about the honor of God. You don’t want to experience something, but to believe. Your gait may sometimes be weary, but you still walk. Sometimes you may appear to come just from the lips and not from the heart. But isn’t it better that at least the lips are blessing God than when the entire human being becomes mute? And isn’t there more hope then that the sound from the lips will find an echo in the heart than when everything in man remains mute? And in our prayer-poor times, what chides oneself or others for as lip-prayer is most often in reality the prayer of a poor but loyal heart that laboriously and honestly, in spite of all the weakness, weariness, and inner discontent, is at least continuing to dig a small shaft through which a small ray of the eternal light falls into our heart that is buried by the everyday.

48 Prayer Journal Part I

Here is the first installment of prayers from the 48 hour journal. Please forgive typos. We tried to type these just like they were written. A couple of names were deleted and replaced with blanks lines to perserve some confidentiality. Continue to write new prayers under the WELCOME post.

Lord, Help me through your strength to always be a willing servant to you and to be always willing to serve others. Give me the wisdom through your word and prayers to do your will. Keep those who are away from loved ones fighting in distant countries to be kept safe. Thank you for all the many blessings you have given us in this life.
In Your Sons Name,
Amen

I thank God for Allen, Gary and all our leadership team. I pray for protection for these our precious leaders. We have such a wonderful church family and so many are willing to do the will of God. I pray God will use us to help others, not only their needs but to bring them into the family of God’s people so they can know the love of God. Love is the most important thing.

Help me to trust in you Lord, guide me in your truth and teach me. Thank you for your unfailing love, your mercy and your grace. Amen

My God, My Jesus—Make me new again. Hear my prayer O Lord, make me new again. God reveal again to me the reason to live like Jesus. Unveil your amazing love for me. Bring me back to you as I have gone astray. Move within me. Mend my broken heart and my wavering spirit. Fill me with your love. Bring my passion back. My God, My Jesus. Make me new again, Amen

Lord in Heaven, Please help guide me through these hard times. I’m so confused, sometimes I fear I don’t know right from wrong anymore. I want to thank you for the Mitchell Church Father, and help us to follow a path that you would be proud of. You have blessed me greatly during the last few months my God and I want to say thanks for all you have done. Please help _____ to find his calling and _____ to find you again. Be with my parents and their financial struggles. They have given so selflessly to us and others, they deserve the best. Thank you for my amazing church and help us to remember that we are your representatives on this earth. Amen

Lord, Life can be so confusing sometimes. There are so many ways one can travel through life, so many paths to venture down. But Father you know exactly which path leads to the true joy you have laid out for my life. Father give me wisdom to choose which path will be best for my life, which career to choose, and where to live. Lord don’t leave me in the dark. Shine a light into my world to guide me through the mist of doubt. I have complete faith that you will never forsake me and that I am always under your protection. Give me wisdom. Give me peace. Give me understanding. Amen

(the wee hours of the am) Lord, I want to first offer up a prayer on the behalf of our young people that are just experiencing the first years of college. I have just finished the experience of college at a large state institution and at times it is difficult to be a young Christian on campus because the ideological differences are so extreme. Ultimately we are the future of the church and I pray that you provide them strength to hold their resolve and to never give in. Lord I pray those things in your name. Amen

Heavenly Father, I thank you for this special time of prayer to thank you for all that you do and for all that you have blessed me with. Thank you for giving me all the special and wonderful people in my life. It’s in your name I pray. Amen

God help us to do your will for those in and out of this church. Give us wisdom and zest to do your will as long as we live. Thank you for your son—may He grow stronger in me. Amen

As we pray the emotions flow so freely before the cross and before God. Why doesn’t our daily prayer life bring the same emotions out of us? Our prayer is to bring the same emotions to our daily prayers and the same openness that we have before the cross of Christ. In Him Always and Amen

Dear Lord it is such a blessing to know you are listening, knowing our hearts and guiding our ways. May we always allow you to be in our hearts. Thank you my Lord! Amen

Lord, we come to you before the cross and ask for forgiveness in the things we do wrong. We thank you for the many blessings in our lives. Thank you for this wondergul church family. Please watch over our troops and keep them safe. In your precious and holy name. Amen

Dear Lord, Thank you! You have truly blessed our family. Our children and home-- I had a scare with my health. These are true blessings from you. There is nothing you can not do—We need to learn to never box you in. All things are possible when you are in control! Please continue to watch over us and let us know what you want the Mitchell Church to be doing. I pray we continue to always keep our eyes on you. Thank you Lord for always being there. We love you and we want to continue to praise your name in all that we do! Amen

Jehovah God, reigning from your throne. Be our vision. Be all that we are and all that we want. Be the light that dawns daily before us. We’re walking in a dark world and need you to guide our way. Be an answer to our prayers. Give us answers so overwhelming that we must kneel in wonder before you and declare your praise among all people. Be it all for your glory. Let it be in the name of Jesus. Amen

It’s amazing what happens when you sit still and listen to God.

Dear Father, You are so awesome and so gracious! Thank you for the blessings you give so richly and we take for granted so often. You have blessed this church family with wonderful leaders who seek you and your will, with so many people with genuine servant hearts, with a group of young people who really want to make a difference—it’s a great family to be a part of! Please bless us with spiritual growth and deeper faith and trust. We love you and praise your blessed name! Amen

Lord in Heaven, Give us your wisdom that we may see as you do and that we may love as you would have us to. May you lead us and guide us in this life so we may be the servants you want us to be. In Christ we pray. Amen

Thank you Lord for this precious time devoted to you. Help us all to make more time daily to pray and serve you. Thank you for showing us how to pray. The prayers in this book are beautiful and genuine! Our prayer lives have grown in this church as we have grown to know you better. Help us to stay focused o you instead of worrying about earthly things. Amen

Dear Heavenly and Amazing Father, He who knows all and loves all. Wow how comforting---despite our huge faults and continuous failures and neglect he still loves each one of us and as much as he did the day before. God, what a special group that has assembled here in our name. You have blessed us with the greatest group of shepherds a church flock could have. Thank you so much for Allen. His wisdom, his passion, his drive and example. Thank you for Allen’s taxing, thought provoking and challenging sermons. Thank you … for Gary’s words of wisdom—down to earth insightful wisdom. What a great team for God!!! How lucky and blessed we are. I thank you personally for the great group of guys in this church family that have bonded. There is nothing better than good Christian fellowship with your brothers in Christ. Dear God help us keep the passion, stay focused and put into action our dreams. Finally thank you for both the elderly and youth of this congregation… the elderly for their example as well as their acceptance and open minds…for the youth dear God and the great fire for you. In closing your heavenly Father this week you welcomed home a great warrior. Enjoy Jack as much as we did!! Blessed Be Your Name!!!
